Don’t Miss Monday’s County Inmate Medi-Cal Program Webinar

November 11, 2016

Counties are encouraged to join a webinar on the long-awaited Medi-Cal Inmate Program (MCIP) this Monday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Hosted by the Department of Health Care Services, the webinar will focus on the program requirements and the role of counties, jails, and medical providers as the state rolls out this new program to allow counties or providers to draw down federal Medicaid funding for inmates who are treated for more than 24 hours at medical facilities that are offsite or separate from county jails.

CSAC, along with the County Health Executives Association of California, the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems, the County Welfare Directors Association, and the California State Sheriffs Association, worked over these two years with the Department to implement MCIP. Large issues included how counties that participate will help pay for administration of the program, which entities may claim federal funds, and how counties or providers may put up required federal matching funds. While each county that chooses to opt into the MCIP program will likely implement it according to their existing jail and provider structure, the MCIP program was designed to be flexible enough to accommodate different models.

All counties are encouraged to participate in the webinar on Monday by registering here. DHCS will release the MCIP program documents either later today or on Monday. CSAC’s Administration of Justice and Health and Human Services teams will continue to participate in the program implementation process; should you have questions, please contact either Darby Kernan at dkernan@counties.org or Farrah McDaid Ting at fmcdaid@counties.org.
