Federal Issues Update
Bipartisan Effort to Protect State-Legal Medical Cannabis Laws

March 30, 2017

Representatives Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) this week began circulating a Dear Colleague letter that urges House appropriators to include language barring DOJ from prosecuting those in compliance with their state’s medical marijuana laws.  This provision, which has come to be known as the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment, has been included in annual spending bills since fiscal-year 2015.  However, in that time, it was added via an amendment on the House floor.  The letter asks that the language instead be included in the base spending bill for fiscal-year 2018.

For its part, CSAC has urged members of the California congressional delegation to sign on to the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer letter.  CSAC also supports extending the same protections to state-legal recreational cannabis.
