PPIC Nursing Home and IHSS Facts Published

Both Nursing homes and In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) provide care to the senior and disabled populations. IHSS allows individuals — those who are able to live independently – to do so while still receiving the care needed. Nursing homes – especially residential care – are very costly and tend to have high occupancy rates. Additional information, including the demographics, costs and utilization of these services can be found in the Public Policy Institute of California’s published facts: Nursing Homes in California and California’s In-Home Supportive Services Program.

Impact of Dementia Care on Medicaid Costs

The Alzheimer’s Association released their report: The Impact of Alzheimer’s on Medicaid Costs: A Growing Burden for States, which estimates a 58.7% ($1.8 billion) increase in Medicaid spending within 10 years for dementia care. The Lewin Group projected that California will spend nearly $5 billion annually on Medi-Cal-funded nursing home care and long-term services and supports for seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
