Important Deadline for CHIP Funding Approaching

August 31, 2017

Congress is running up against a September 30 fiscal deadline to reappropriate federal funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). California serves about 1.6 million low-income children and mothers by drawing down nearly half a billion dollars annually in CHIP funding.

Without CHIP funding, some families risk losing coverage for their children if their income is too high to qualify for Medicaid/Medi-Cal and too low to purchase family coverage. CSAC strongly supports a four-year extension of funding for CHIP, including the enhanced federal matching rate of 88 cents per dollar spent. Additional details on the funding situation for CHIP are available here .
