Judicial Council Considers IT Disaster Recovery

March 1, 2018

Judicial Council Meets March 2

The Judicial Council at its Friday, March 2 business meeting will consider a proposed framework that will assist courts and other judicial branch entities with information technology disaster recovery planning efforts. The proposed framework includes a how-to guide and model template that courts can fill in to create their own plans.

It also has information on addressing corrupted backup systems, controlling access to those backups, and cloud options. The council will also vote on whether to request funding from the Legislature to assist courts with plan adoption and disaster recovery software and hardware. The need for disaster planning was evident last fall, as wildfires threatened courthouses and caused temporary closures, and mudslides prompted one court to open a satellite office for stranded employees across county lines.

Other items on the council meeting agenda include:

Next-Generation IT Hosting: The council will consider a new guide to help courts find IT hosting solutions for their local needs. The proposed guide covers topics such as hosting options and service level expectations, and provides court leaders with information on transition planning and budgeting.

Updates from Council Liaison Visits to Local Courts: The council is scheduled to receive liaison reports on the superior courts in Alameda and Yuba Counties. These reports give council members information on a court’s operations and challenges, as well as its solutions to increase efficiency and effectiveness in how it provides access to justice for the public.

The meeting agenda and council reports are online, and a link to the live videocast of the meeting will be on the California Courts website on the day of the meeting.
