“Small Cell” Wireless Bill Pulled

June 26, 2016

AB 2788 was pulled from committee this week as the author, Assembly Member Mike Gatto, indicated that it would not move forward this year. CSAC and its local government and planning partners quickly expressed our strong opposition when the proposal was amended into a different bill last week.

AB 2788 would have eliminated review of the aesthetic impacts of so-called wireless “small cell” antennas, provided an end-run around environmental review, shut out the public from the permitting process, and interfered with the ability of local agencies to fairly determine the terms of leases of the public right of way for installation of these facilities.

While we are grateful that the proposal appears to be inactive for the time being, CSAC is already working with technical experts in an effort to be prepared if a similar bill is introduced next year.
