Stepping Up Initiative Webinar Offered

The National Association of Counties (NACo) will be hosting a webinar for the Stepping Up series focusing on key strategies for connecting people with mental illnesses to community service after released from jail. In May, CSAC hosted a news conference at the State Capitol to help draw attention to the number of mentally ill inmates in county jails. It was one of several similar events held to kick off the Stepping Up for Mental Illness initiative sponsored by NACo, the Council of State Governments Justice Center and the American Psychiatric Association. The goal is to find ways to provide treatment and other alternatives for people with mental illness.

The webinar will take place on Thursday, October 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. PT. To register, click here.

NACo also released a brief exploring the complex challenges that counties face in addressing comprehensive health care needs in jail populations: Addressing Mental Illness and Medical Conditions in County Jails. Key findings reaffirmed that a large share of the jail population has a mental illness or medical condition and addressing the health care needs of the jail population is a major challenge.

Complementary to the study, NACo also released three case studies examining strategies counties use to address the health care needs of incarcerated individuals.
