The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Department of Public Works are announcing a recruitment for the position of Assistant Director of Public Works. There is one full-time vacancy available.

The Assistant Director will provide leadership, administrative oversight and policy direction to several divisions and organizational units of The Department of Public Works. Maintaining proactive communications and positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders will be an essential aspect of this assignment. The public works and infrastructure responsibilities require partnership and coordination with local, regional, state and federal agencies. It also involves working with the public and community on the wide array of general services provided by the Department, which necessitates a collaborative customer focused management style.

Long-term planning issues related to traffic and congestion relief, climate change and funding to maintain County roadways and bridges, are key priorities for the County. On an operational level, management of infrastructure maintenance on roads, county buildings, flood control facilities, radio communications and the county airport are focus areas.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a proven leader with a strategic and entrepreneurial approach to their work. S/he demonstrates an ability to successfully work within a leadership team concept with executive management, other department managers and professional staff. The Ideal candidate has demonstrated experience in an executive role managing a successful organization or division. S/he successfully manages relationships with staff, customers, vendors, boards and partner organizations and agencies. As such, the ideal candidate has strong management and project management skills complemented by outstanding communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver with an ability to manage expectations and deliver results in working effectively with professional staff and the public. In addition, the ideal candidate is well versed in the use of technology solutions and project management. The ideal candidate will possess registration as a professional engineer in the State of California.

Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a closely related field and five years of engineering management or supervisory experience in a broad-based and comprehensive public works setting. Such experience must have included either management of staff through subordinate levels of supervision or programmatic responsibility for a major engineering function. Possession of registration as a professional engineer in the State of California is desirable.
