The County of San Diego invites résumés from candidates with exemplary qualifications for the position of
Chief Probation Officer.

The Chief Probation Officer is appointed by the Board of Supervisors, subject to confirmation by a majority of the Superior Court judges. The incumbent leads a department of Probation Officers and administrative staff who supervise more than14,000 adults and juveniles in the community and another 450 in juvenile halls and camps. The Probation Department employs 1,259 staff and has an operating budget of $223 million.

The juvenile justice and criminal justice systems in San Diego rely heavily on a collaborative and team approach to achieving results and maintaining public safety—the ideal candidate will demonstrate how he or she will successfully integrate the Probation Department within this unified effort.

Qualifications:

Qualifying candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university AND, five (5) years of management experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the classification.
Experience must include one year of supervision in a sworn position with a criminal justice or corrections agency. A master’s degree or higher degree may substitute for a total of one year of the required experience but cannot be applied to the required one year of supervision.
The County of San Diego Chief Probation Officer is a “peace officer” pursuant to California Penal Code section 830 and must meet employment guidelines and standards established by the Commission for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Sections 1029 and 1031 of the California Government Code. The Chief Probation Officer is also an”administrator” in accordance with the California Code of Regulations, Title 15, section 102, and must meet the applicable Board of State and Community Corrections standards related to management training.
(Note: For management training, the County will accept the Manager/Administrator Core Course (MACC) certification or may consider equivalent training programs, such as the California POST management course. )
