Description:

This Department Head classification has responsibility for managing and directing the services of the County Counsel Department, serves as chief legal advisor for the Board of Supervisors, County departments; conducts and oversees litigation for the County; attends Board Meetings; handles all aspects of Child Protective Service Matters; oversees the preparation of contracts and other legal documents.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a strong legal generalist, proficient and conversant in a wide range of public agency law. He/she is ethical, tactful, professional, well-spoken and an all-around excellent public communicator. He/she has a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience as a public agency counsel, at least two (2) of which were spent in a supervisory or management role. He/she has a track record of successfully handling public agency transactional matters, litigating cases on behalf of public entities, preparing public reports and presentations for elected officials in a political environment, and providing sound, practical advice to elected officials and department heads in myriad areas of the law. Strongest candidates will have substantial legal experience in the areas of Land Use and Natural Resources, and will appreciate the importance of mentoring and succession planning in a small, rural county office. Candidates must have active membership in, and good standing with, the State Bar of California.
