Description:

Kings County is seeking qualified candidates with increasingly responsible experience in fire suppression and administration. The ideal candidate must be a strong leader with experience in planning, directing, and coordinating complex firefighting and emergency medical services. The applicant should have strong experience in budgeting, strategic planning, and fire suppression planning. Effective communications skills are essential for critical networking and facilitation with various agencies and community groups.

The Kings County Fire Department covers a territory of 1,391 square miles and serves a resident population of 150,373. The Kings County Fire Department primarily serves the rural areas of Kings County and provides contracted services to the cities of Avenal and Corcoran. The Department’s operating budget is approximately $11.6 million, with a staff of 72 paid professionals, ten fire stations, and one headquarters office.

The County Fire Chief classification is a department head level, at-will position. The incumbent is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors

Qualifications:

Education: A two (2) year degree (Associate of Arts or Associate of Science) from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Technology, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related field.

Desirable: A four year degree (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Technology, Public or Business Administration, or closely related field.

Experience: Eight years of increasingly responsible experience in fire suppression and administration, including at least three years as a chief officer in a paid position of an organized fire department.

License: Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Certificate: Possession of a Chief Officer Certification issued by the California State Fire Marshal’s Office.
