Located at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Clara County is the most populous county in the Bay Area, and one of the most affluent counties in the country. With headquarters in Los Gatos, the County Parks and Recreation Department includes twenty-nine parks with a 50,000-acre park system encompassing a variety of exceptional urban and rural recreational amenities. Reporting to the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Deputy Director will be responsible for assisting the Director in ensuring the Department meets the regional recreation, trail and natural area needs of the public by achieving the vision for the parks system through the acquisition, planning, and development of quality park facilities, with specific responsibility for park planning, real estate and construction services for the regional park system. This Deputy Director supervises seven staff who have responsibility for natural resources management, business and administrative services. Department resources include 218 FTEs and an operating budget of $50 million.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, innovative leader with excellent interpersonal and stakeholder relationship skills along with a positive track record in organizational development and staff management, and who possesses a customer service orientation and a demonstrated ability to lead effectively in a collaborative environment. Budget and fiscal management acumen and excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative/management experience in a significant parks and recreation department/program or other large comparable agency, two (2) years of which should include experience supervising staff in a complex public agency system, and a relevant Bachelor’s degree are required.
