Description:

Reporting to the elected Board of Supervisors, the Director of Public Works will be an innovative and transformative leader, with the full responsibility to administer a large and diverse agency, carrying out the duties of County Engineer, Road Commissioner, Chief Engineer of the Flood Control District, Building Official, County Surveyor, General Manager of the County Waterworks Districts and Sewer Maintenance Districts, and Director of Aviation. The Director will have executive authority and accountability for all aspects of the Department’s operations, including a $2.3 billion budget. Building on the Department’s 103 year history of service and stewardship, the Director will create new opportunities for state-of-the-art and sustainable practices in order to achieve the Department’s vision: Creating communities … sustaining life.

Qualifications:

The candidate selected will demonstrate success in managing a large public works or engineering organization engaged in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of major public or private infrastructure projects. Such management includes administrative functions of an organization as well as the direction of engineering, construction, maintenance and technical functions.

The successful candidate must possess a current California Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer. Additionally, candidates will have a California Class “C” driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

U.S. citizenship is required for appointment to this position.
