Annual salary range: $97,198 – $133,952

Description:

The San Bernardino Valley is temperate with about 15 inches of rain annually and temperatures ranging from the 30s to the 60s in January and from the 50s to high 90s in July. The San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead are popular winter sports locations. The Regional Parks Department manages and maintains nine Regional Parks throughout San Bernardino County totaling approximately 9,200 acres.

The Director of Regional Parks plans, develops, administers and evaluates the activities of the County Regional Parks Department, which includes scenic parks with recreational use areas, a State Historic site, and regional equestrian, hiking, and bicycle trails. This is an excellent opportunity to assist in re-inventing and developing the potential of the park system, land use, and relationships with the concessions industry and other key stakeholders. Knowledge and background with water systems, irrigation, lease agreements with agencies, concession contracts, overseeing capital projects and budgets are highly desirable. The Director will ensure rules and policies are up to date and followed and will relish the opportunity to take a traditional department and usher it into a new generation of best practices and an opportunity to re-invent the park system.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a high energy, articulate leader who is responsive to questions and feedback from the public, staff, management, community and executive leaders, and elected officials. The successful candidate will have an excellent track record building partnerships with vendors and contractors; a strong business acumen; will be politically astute without exhibiting political bias; have exceptional interpersonal skills; and be a leader that can provide strategic direction, while ensuring implementation of process improvements, procedural efficiencies, and sound fiscal policies, technical enhancements, and proper personnel training, mentoring and development. The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service ethic and the ability to empower employees while also holding them accountable. Bachelor’s Degree in Public/Business Administration, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies or another relevant field and five (5) years of administrative, technical or management experience in regional parks and open space is expected. Demonstrated experience in budget planning and administration, parks management and planning, and program and activities development is required.
