Description:
The positions are located in the Disability Retirement Services
Division. Disability Retirement Services is responsible for
investigating and evaluating disability retirement applications
from active, retired, and deferred members of LACERA.
The following examples are intended to describe the general
nature and level of work performed by persons assigned to each
classification. Depending on the assignment, duties may include,
but are not limited to the following:
Analyzes workers’ compensation files to determine circumstances
of disability claims.
Interviews disability retirement applicants, their co-workers,
supervisors, departmental safety and personnel officers, and
others to develop complete information on the circumstances
surrounding industrial accidents critical to disability
retirement applications.
Prepares disability evaluation report documenting the applicant’s
claim for disability.
Coordinates the management of cases with the Return to Work
Coordinator from the respective departments within the County to
assure that every effort is made to rehabilitate injured or
disabled employees and encourage their return to employment
consistent with the nature of the illness or injury, if
possible.
Contacts applicants, physicians, employee service officers,
rehabilitation specialists, and departmental personnel officers
concerning the status of cases.
Locates departmental personnel officers in connection with
industrial accidents resulting in disability retirement
applications to determine whether employers have made available
all pertinent information regarding disability applications.
Under the direct supervision of a Disability Retirement
Specialist Supervisor, submits recommendations regarding the
granting or denial of service and non-service connected
disability retirements to the disability retirement services
division manager prior to being forwarded on to the Board of
Retirement.
Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university*
and one (1) year of experience in an assignment requiring
investigation of workers’ compensation claims or investigating
disability retirement applications for a public or private
entity
-OR-
Two (2) years of experience at the level of a Retirement Benefits
Specialist III researching and resolving retirement benefit
claims and inquiries.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated experience counseling members regarding retirement
benefits.
Demonstrated experience investigating disability retirement
claims in a public pension fund.
Demonstrated experience conducting interviews of applicants for
disability retirement, workers’ compensation, insurance, or long
term disability claims.
Demonstrated experience working with medical terminology.
Demonstrated experience ordering, evaluating, & indexing relevant
medical, personnel and return-to-work or similar records.
Demonstrated experience in investigative report writing.
