$23.90 – $29.06 per hour

Description:

The Engineering Technician performs difficult sub-professional engineering office and fieldwork that may include surveying, construction inspection, drafting, and creating and editing Geographic Information System (GIS) layers and maps. This position is subject to overtime, standby, and callback assignments. Performs related duties as assigned.

The desirable candidate should be familiar with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Caltrans Highway Design Manual (HDM), Computer Aided Design (CAD), and the principles of traffic signal and roadway lighting design. Duties may include review and/or drafting of Traffic Signal Plans, Street Lighting Plans, Sign and Striping Plans, and Temporary Traffic Control Plans. This position requires a moderate amount of field work including the collection of traffic data for various operations and planning studies, and the ability to collect and analyze technical data in an organized, presentable manner.

Qualifications:

Ability to:
• Operate survey and engineering equipment;
• Make accurate engineering computations;
• Prepare maps, drawings, and layouts from notes and sketches;
• Interpret laws, rules, and regulations;
• Prepare clear, accurate notes and reports;
• Inspect construction projects to determine compliance with approved specifications and plans;
• Follow oral and written directions; and
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the public.

Knowledge of:

• Engineering mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry;
• Principles, methods, and techniques of drafting; and
• Common engineering methods and standards.

Experience:

• Three (3) years of experience in engineering, survey or office work, of which at least one (1) year shall have been at a level of difficulty equivalent to the work performed by an Engineering Aid II in the Stanislaus County Department of Public Works; AND
• High School graduate or equivalent, which included courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
