The Contra Costa County Library is seeking to fill one part-time (32 hours per week) position for Library Literacy Assistant. The incumbent in this position will assist with volunteer recruitment, training and support activities, provide program information, and promote library literacy programs through various media.

The Library Literacy Assistant will be responsible for recruiting and training volunteers, conducting student in-take interviews, recommending appropriate methods and materials to tutors, maintaining records and gathering data, assisting with special events including Families for Literacy, contributing to newsletters, overseeing the library literacy lab, and representing library literacy programs at meetings.

The individual appointed to this position must possess the ability to relate positively with various multi-cultural communities; plan, organize, and work independently; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; and establish harmonious working relationships with staff, volunteers, community groups and representatives. Teaching experience is highly desirable. Appointee must be available to work at least one night a week and approximately 13 Saturdays a year. Qualifications:

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

Education/Experience Options: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in education, speech pathology and audiology, psychology, communications, humanities, social science or behavioral science field; or 200 hours of previous tutoring experience in an established literacy program and possession of either 1) 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university or 2) certification as a teacher.
