San Mateo County, located in the heart of the San Francisco Peninsula, offers a wide range of recreational pursuits, economic opportunities and numerous attractions. The Department of Parks operates 17 parks, 3 regional trails and numerous other county and local trails encompassing 15,680 acres. The area represents a wide variety of natural settings, including a coast side marine reserve, a bayside recreational area, coastal mountain woodland areas and urban sites.
We are currently seeking a Parks Director to oversee the operations, resource management and planning of the County’s parks system. With a budget of $16.1 million and a staff of 51, the new Director will help shape the future of the parks systems focusing on funding for parks, resource management, succession planning, marketing of the parks and grants management.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an approachable, politically astute leader with a management style that quickly fosters trust, loyalty, respect, commitment and partnership from the community, other county managers and employees, as well as a strategic thinker and planner, a collaborator and team builder and a highly focused professional with exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will have 5 years of increasingly responsible professional park management and development experience with at least 2 years of experience in a managerial capacity within a political environment.
