Description:

Alameda County is the geographic center of the San Francisco Bay Area, located on the east side of the Bay across from the San Francisco peninsula.  Alameda is the second largest county in the Bay Area and is commonly referred to as the “East Bay.”  The region has been the fastest growing in the San Francisco Bay Area and is popular because of its desirable location, incredible diversity, ideal climate, broad economic base, plus its range of available housing and business opportunities.  The Public Defender is the primary defense attorney mandated to defend individuals within the County who are required by statute, State or Federal Constitution to be provided with legal counsel at public expense. The mission of the Public Defender is to provide a fully competent, effective and ethical defense for each client whose representation has been entrusted to the office, to conduct that representation in a manner that promotes fairness in the administration of justice and to provide all mandated legal services in a cost effective and efficient manner.  The new Public Defender will provide progressive leadership to a committed and engaged staff within Alameda County.  This position is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and is expected to work closely with the Board and County Administrator along with fellow agencies that comprise the public protection community of the County.

Qualifications:

The new Public Defender will embrace the role of the office and possess a high level of ethics, integrity and a sense of duty to the criminal justice system.  The successful candidate will have the equivalent of 10 years full-time experience as an attorney practicing in criminal defense work with significant experience in litigation of serious felony cases and at least 12 months experience as the direct supervisor of at least 10 attorneys, or in supervising a branch office or subsection of a public defender’s office.  (Experience in administering legal services in a government agency or in a large private firm with an active criminal trial practice is especially desirable.) The position will also require good standing as a current member in the State Bar of California.
