The Senior Engineering Technician, under direction, performs a
wide range of complex technical or paraprofessional engineering
work in connection with engineering design and construction, and
other related work as required. The successful candidate will
prepare engineering plans, (may include architectural plans),
profiles, cross-sections, specifications, and cost estimates as
well as calculate and plot field survey data. The incumbent is
also responsible for instructing, training, and supervising
subordinate personnel.
The desirable candidate should be familiar with the Manual on
Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Highway Capacity Manual,
CalTrans Highway Design Manual, Computer Aided Design, and the
principles of traffic signal and roadway lighting design. Duties
may include review and/or drafting of Traffic Signal Plans,
Street Lighting Plans, Sign and Striping Plans, and Temporary
Traffic Control Plans. This position requires a moderate amount
of field work including the collection of traffic data for
various operations and planning studies and the ability to
collect and analyze technical data in an organized, presentable
manner.
TYPICAL TASKS:
• Utilize engineering computer software to make determinations
and compute vertical and horizontal alignments, curves, grades,
cross-slopes, traverse for highways, drainage, sewer facilities,
traffic, and other related tasks;
• Calculate mathematical accuracy and check for legal sufficiency
of land survey maps;
• Search County records for property, titles and
restrictions;
• Act as custodian for legal records on subdivision maps and
County property documents;
• Prepare correspondence and maintain files;
• Prepare engineering estimates and project schedules;
• Make complex mathematical computations related to civil
engineering;
• Understand and interpret field survey notes;
• Write concise engineering reports;
• Prepare civil engineering plan sets and charts;
• Inspect construction of roads, bridges and other public
improvements at a responsible level; and
• May create and edit G.I.S. layers and maps.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Abilities, Knowledge,
Education/Experience):
Skills/Abilities:
• Understand, interpret and apply County standards,
specifications, ordinances, and codes;
• Work cooperatively with other units in the department, other
agencies and the public;
• Apply engineering principles and terminology in preparation of
public works projects;
• Write contract specifications and prepare cost estimates;
• Supervise and train subordinate personnel; and,
• Inspect construction work for compliance with plans and
specifications.
Knowledge:
• County improvement standards and construction specifications
used by local agencies;
• Civil engineering, design, mapping, and drafting
procedures;
• Construction materials, practices and cost estimating
procedures;
• Basic engineering hydraulics used in designing cross-culverts
and other drainage facilities;
• Theories and practices of traffic engineering; and
• Algebra, plane geometry and trigonometry
Education/Experience:

• Two (2) or more years completed at an accredited
college or university with major coursework in engineering
science, construction management or a related field; AND
• Three (3) years of experience in an engineering office
and/or architectural office performing civil engineering, traffic
engineering, land survey or construction inspection work at a
level of difficulty equivalent to the work performed by an
Engineering Technician in the Stanislaus County Department of
Public Works.
• NOTE: An additional two (2) or more years completed at an
accredited college or university may substitute for one (1) year
of the required experience, provided that there were courses in
engineering, surveying, drafting, mathematics, computer science,
or the physical sciences.
Desirable Qualifications:
Applicant screening, in addition to the minimum qualifications,
will focus on the following desirable categories. Please list any

• One (1) year of experience with traffic signal or
street lighting systems; OR
• One (1) year of experience in roadway design; OR
• One (1) year of experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or
Land Desktop; OR
• One (1) year of experience with roadway or storm water
design; OR
• Three (3) years of experience preparing plans and
specifications.
