The County of Sonoma Permit and Resource Management Department seeks a dynamic and seasoned professional for Supervising Planner.

The Permit and Resource Management Department (PRMD) is seeking to fill one full-time Supervising Planner vacancy.

Supervising Planners exercise considerable independent judgment, lead major projects, and may also provide staff support to boards and commissions or represent the County through direct participation in local or regional committees or forums. The current vacancy will be responsible for supervision of the Current Planning/Development Review section.

The Supervising Planner will perform the following typical duties:
• Assist in the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; prepare reports and findings; and perform the most complex and sensitive planning work.
• Supervise, train, evaluate, coordinate, review, and participate in the work of professional, technical, and clerical staff in preparing staff reports, data collection, analyses, plan formulation, and implementation of a wide variety of planning, zoning, and environmental issues.
• Supervise and coordinate the County’s Project Review or Comprehensive Planning programs and special planning, zoning, and environmental studies.
• Meet and advise developers regarding development applications and processes, explain purposes, regulations, and directives of accepted development practices.


PRMD is seeking an experienced professional planner who possesses:
• Strong oral and written communications skills
• The ability to interact positively with the general public, business owners, municipal leaders, elected officials, boards and commissions
• Proven ability to effectively collaborate both within the department and outside agencies
• At least four years of professional planning experience implementing a wide variety of complex planning issues
• The ability to manage multiple disciplines and juggle competing priorities.
• Proven leadership ability and excellent analytical problem solving skills.

Qualifications:

Education: Normally, education equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban, regional or environmental planning, solid waste planning, geography, architecture, landscape architecture, economics, environmental studies or closely related courses, would provide such opportunity.

Experience: Normally, four or more years of professional planning experience in city, county, or regional planning, or private planning agency would provide such opportunity.
