The Voice of California’s Counties
On behalf of member counties, CSAC’S legislative staff develops, communicates and advocates positions in the legislative and regulatory arenas at the state and federal levels. The complex issues that CSAC follows directly impact the programs and services provided by California counties.
CSAC’s legislative program is coordinated with members of the county caucus and representatives of affiliate agencies. Throughout the year, CSAC staff, elected supervisors and county personnel testify before committees and in public forums. Data collection and policy development are ongoing efforts of the legislative unit.
CSAC’s legislative unit consists of the following major policy areas: Government Finance and Operations; Health and Human Services; Administration of Justice; Housing, Land Use and Transportation; and Agriculture and Natural Resources. CSAC staff and policy committees analyze and recommend CSAC positions that are consistent with the County Platform and actions of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
During the legislative session, counties are updated on CSAC’s actions through The CSAC Bulletin, a weekly eletronic publication distributed to our members and available on CSAC’s Website. A Web-based legislative tracking tool is also available to assist counties in tracking legislation of interest. CSAC utilizes legislative alerts and other informational briefs to alert counties of rapidly changing events in the legislative arena. CSAC works closely with the news media to present legislative priorities and strives to build coalitions with other interest groups.
