Continued population growth, an aging population and a struggling economy have stretched the fiscal and natural resources of counties to the limit. County officials in partnerships with the private sector are taking new and creative approaches to provide services, and to continue to provide an improved quality of life for Californians.
This year, the Innovation Summit will highlight these innovations in two areas. First, we will explore a variety of sustainable activities, ranging from reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy, water and fuel cost savings, and improving health and resilience to climate change.
Second, we will explore the impact of an aging population on county economies, including health care systems. Innovative strategies and best practices that strive to ensure a healthy and invigorating future for all Californians will be presented.
Dr. Claudia Kawas, principle investigator of the “The 90+ Study” will present her findings. Her work is concentrated on the epidemiology of aging and Alzheimer’s disease, in the determinants of successful aging, longitudinal and clinical pathological investigations, clinical trials, and most recently, studies in cognitive and functional abilities of the Oldest Old (over 90 years of age).
We will also hear from Dr. Lisa Santora, Chief Medical Officer for Beach Cities Health District in Redondo Beach. Dr. Santora also played an instrumental role in bringing the nationally recognized Blue Zones Project, which has successfully lowered smoking and obesity rates in the community, to the Beach Cities.
While the Summit is free, we are looking for participants to register in advance when they register for the Annual Meeting in order to ensure they have a seat for this increasingly popular event. To register, click here.
