Action Coming Soon: Broadband Merger
May 12, 2016
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) meets today to review a slate of items – including the proposed merger of broadband providers. This proceeding, involving Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks Information Services, and Charter Communications, is currently recommended for approval by CPUC staff.
The proposed merger may have implications for counties in terms of access and speed, and stakeholders have raised concerns about access to high-speed internet in some locations. During the lengthy CPUC proceeding process, which began in summer 2015, many parties on both sides of the merger weighed in.
The Administrative Law Judge at the CPUC provided analysis that found “the requested transfers satisfy the applicable provisions…and are in the public interest” when amended by certain conditions. The next step is the CPUC hearing, where commissioners will discuss and vote on the proposal. CSAC will continue to monitor the proceedings and keep counties apprised of the outcome.
