May 2, 2019
The CSAC AENR Policy Committee recently met at the Legislative Conference in Sacramento on April 25. The meeting covered a variety of topics including wildfire liability, cannabis, and California’s looming recycling crisis.
The first item on the agenda was a roundtable discussion with CSAC’s utility liability coalition partners including Attorney John Fiske, Up From the Ashes Victims Advocacy President Patrick McCallum, and Cara Martinson. The discussion centered mainly on the Governor’s recently released wildfire report and the potential impact of changing utility liability laws.
The second presentation of the meeting included a discussion of the current state of California’s cannabis markets with the Governor’s Senior Adviser for Cannabis from GO Biz, Nicole Elliott. In addition, Hasan Sarsour from CSAC’s federal lobbying team also presented on efforts at the federal level to change national cannabis laws.
The Committee also heard from Legislative Director Tina Andolina from Senator Ben Allen’s office and Legislative Director Katrina Robinson from Senator Nancy Skinner’s office on the Legislature’s efforts to confront major shifts in California’s recycling industries. Commodity prices for used plastics and paper have dropped dramatically since China initiated its National Sword trade limitation policies. Specifically, the pair discussed SB 54 (Allen) which would require businesses to reduce the amount of plastic used in single use packaging in an effort to decrease wasted or landfilled plastic.
