CDCR Extends Intake Suspension Amid COVID-19

April 30, 2020

As of April 27, in accordance with Governor Newsom’s March 24 Executive Order, CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz has extended the suspension of state correctional facility intake for an additional 30 days, through May 22, 2020. All offenders are being received, detained or housed in local correctional facilities currently detaining or housing them for this additional time. The order allows Secretary Diaz to grant one or more 30-day extensions if suspension continues to be necessary to protect against the spread of COVID-19.

Earlier this month, the Department of Finance notified the Joint Legislative Budget Committee (JLBC) of its intent to fund counties for the impacts of early releases and the closure of state prison intake. As previously discussed, this funding included $3 million for the impact of early releases on the Post Release Community Supervision population and an estimated $5.7 million for the impact of prison intake closures on the county jail population. It is expected that further funding will be made available based on this extension.
