CDCR Issues Three-Judge Panel Update for July

July 21, 2016

California continues to provide monthly reports on the status of state prison populations. The latest is the Three-Judge Panel Update for July. California is required by a February 10, 2014 court order to submit status reports on current in-state and out-of-state adult prison populations and the measures being taken to reduce the prison population in response to the order.

CDCR met its final population target of 137.5 percent by February 28, 2016 and the current population is 134.6 percent of design capacity. However, if the new 1,584 infill beds are counted at 137.5 percent for the compliance calculation, the prison population is approximately 135.2 percent of design capacity. The report provides a brief description of Governor Brown’s Public Safety and Rehabilitation

Act of 2016 (Proposition 57) and includes the current population total of each of the 34 California correctional institutions.
