Counties May Apply to Allow EMS Personnel to Administer Vaccine

Counties seeking to increase the number of personnel who can administer the COVID-19 vaccines may allow paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to do so after receiving approval from the state Emergency Medical Services Authority.

The Governor’s Executive Order N-25-20 (March 12, 2020) authorizes the expansion of the local optional scope of practice for emergency medical service personnel. To date, 28 out of the 33 Local Emergency Medical Services Agencies have received approval for paramedics to vaccinate the public, and 3 have received approval to allow EMTs to vaccinate the public. The list of counties is below. For county LEMSAs wishing to apply for approval of a Local Optional Scope of Practice, please visit https://emsa.ca.gov/covid19/.

The 28 LEMSAs that have received approval for public vaccinations by paramedics include:

  • Alameda, Contra Costa, Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Sacramento, San Benito, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Ventura, Yolo, Central California, Coastal Valleys, Inland Counties, Mountain-Valley, and Northern California

The 27 LEMSAs that have received approval for EMS personnel vaccinations by paramedics include:

  • Alameda, El Dorado, Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Marin, Merced, Napa, Orange, Sacramento, San Benito, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barba, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Ventura, Yolo, Central California, Coastal Valleys, Inland Counties, Mountain-Valley, and Northern California

The three LEMSAs that have received approval for public vaccinations by EMTs include:

  • Kern, San Francisco, and Solano

The two LEMSAs that have received approval for EMS personnel vaccinations by EMTs include:

  • Kern and San Francisco
