CSAC Joins Capitol Lobbying Day Event for Plastic Waste Reduction Bill
August 22, 2019
CSAC’s Senior Legislative Representative, Cara Martinson met with several legislators as part of a major lobbying day effort on SB 54 (Allen) / AB 1080 (Gonzalez). These two measures are companion bills that would require the adoption of regulations requiring covered entities to reduce the waste associated with single use packaging and products 75 percent by 2030.
These bills would help California transition away from single use plastic containers to reusable or compostable packaging. In addition, the bills would promote the development of in-state manufacturing that uses recycled material. The lobbying day involved dozens of environmental and resource recovery advocates who worked the halls of the Capitol urging support for one of the most high profile environmental bills of the session.
CSAC supports these efforts because local governments have long been responsible for ensuring that California can achieve its recycling and waste management goals and are in support of reducing waste at its source before it gets to our local landfills and recycling centers; or worse to our beaches and other beautiful natural environments.
