Governor Calls for “More Aggressive Action” on Homelessness

November 3, 2022

Governor Newsom rejected all applications for the third round of state Homelessness Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) grants today, calling for more accelerated goals to reduce street homelessness.

“As a state, we are failing to meet the urgency of this moment,” Newsom said. Read the Governor’s press release here.

In response, CSAC Executive Director Graham Knaus issued the following statement:

“California’s counties share the urgency and frustration expressed by Governor Newsom today, and we call on the state to partner with local governments to develop the nation’s first comprehensive homelessness plan to meet the moment of this profound crisis. The rate of people experiencing homelessness in California exponentially outpaces our efforts and will continue to do so as long as we continue to act in silos with uncertain funding.”

Homelessness has been a priority for CSAC, with the Board of Directors adopting guiding principles in September and the concurrent work of several homeless policy-related working groups. Additionally, CSAC is currently surveying counties to ascertain the scope of the crisis at the county level and help identify gaps and needs for making progress.

Knaus added, “California’s 58 counties seek to engage the Governor, Legislature, cities, community partners and those who are living without shelter to forge these critical building blocks and investments together so we can tackle this crisis collectively.”
