Governor Extends Deadline for Assessment Appeals Hearings

August 6, 2020

This week, Governor Newsom signed Executive Order N-72-20 – his 44th COVID-related executive action – which extends until January 31, 2021 the deadline to hear property tax assessment appeals filed on or before March 4, 2020.

Existing law generally requires that assessment appeals be heard within two years of filing, or else they are automatically granted. Like many in-person activities, assessment appeals hearings have been on hiatus during the COVD-19 emergency.

The order grants some relief to county assessment appeals boards, though further relief might be required, especially if a method is not devised to legally hold these quasi-judicial hearings remotely.
