NEW: First-Ever Federal Homelessness Prevention Framework Released

September 26, 2024

This week, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) adopted and released  Ending Homelessness Before It States: A Federal Homelessness Prevention Framework. This actionable guide, which was informed by people with lived experience of homelessness and developed in collaboration with multiple agencies, is intended for a wide range of partners, including local, tribal, and state governments, non-profits, providers, and other community partners. Specifically, the framework:

  • Details steps for developing a community-wide, cross-system approach to homelessness prevention
  • Defines categories of homelessness prevention
  • Shares promising practices for homelessness prevention programs
  • Lists federal resources that can be used for homelessness prevention

USICH also launched a new series spotlighting local and federal efforts to prevent homelessness, with a focus on specific populations. The first spotlight in the blog series focuses on youth homelessness and highlights the work of four California counties’ (Alameda, San Diego, San Francisco, and Ventura) efforts to prevent homelessness among foster youth and other at-risk youth populations, including LGBTQI+.
