New Report: Co-Occurring Mental Illness and Addiction

February 9, 2017

While little data is available regarding the co-occurrence of opioid addiction and serious mental illness among adults, a new report by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) helps provide more insight into the issue. According to the report, approximately 1.5 million adult Americans who live with a serious mental illness in the past year also misused an opioid during that period.

The SAMHSA report includes any use of heroin and/or the misuse of opioid-based prescription pain relievers. More details on the report are available here.
