Senator Dodd to Convene Senate Select Committee on Wildfires for June 10
June 6, 2019
Senator Dodd will convene a legislative hearing to review the recently released informal draft report from the Commission on Catastrophic Wildfire Cost and Recovery. The hearing will include testimony from the Commission’s members and State Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. The Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee held an informational hearing on the report on June 5with Commissioners Peterman and Kahn providing testimony.
The Commission, created by SB 901 (Dodd 2018), is set to consider an official adoption of the report on Friday June 7 at 10 a.m. in Sacramento at City Hall. CSAC and our coalition partners have been active participants in the Commission’s meetings and sent a letter to the Commission in response to the released report. You can read that letter here. The letter expresses willingness to work on solutions that reduce risk, protect victims and ensure safe and affordable power. However, it expresses staunch opposition to the Commission’s proposed idea that changes should be made to the utility liability law standard of inverse condemnation.
Just after the release of the draft report, the Governor and Legislative leaders issued a joint statement expressing that changes to utility liability law would not be considered for the remainder of the Legislative session.
The Senate Select Committee on Wildfires will meet on Monday, June 10 at 3 p.m. in Room 112 of the State Capitol.
