U.S. Interior to Distribute $34.5M in PILT
The Department of the Interior (DOI) notified the national
Association of Counties (NACo) that it would begin issuing
payments to counties for the remaining 2015 Payment in Lieu of
Taxes (PILT) funds later today.
Funds appropriated for 2015 PILT payments included $37 million that did not become available until October 1, 2015. Due to the impacts of sequestration, $34.5 million will be distributed to county governments in today’s payment.
NACo and our county officials successfully advocated for the inclusion of a PILT “technical fix”, which was included as Section 138 or the recently passed Continuing Resolution. The technical fix was necessary to ensure the Department of the Interior was be able to distribute the final $37 million in PILT funds authorized in last year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) as soon as possible. Without enactment of the technical fix, it was likely DOI would not have been able to distribute the remaining 2015 PILT funds until spring of 2016. The payments, whose distribution will begin today, are a direct result of that legislative effort.
