Description:

Will oversee the Building and Safety Division’s plan review program, work to identify and implement strategies and initiatives to improve the customer experience and streamline the plan check process with a goal of reducing review time, will coordinate reviews with other departments and outside agencies, assist in daily division operations, including performing the more difficult and complex building plan reviews, and supervise plan reviews and building permit issuances for residential and commercial structures. The Assistant Building Official assigns, trains, instructs, and evaluates the work of building plan review staff and takes an active role in performance management, coaching and staff/team development. Additionally, this individual will directly supervise plan review staff and may act as the Chief Building Official in his or her absence, serve on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees; conduct presentations and participate in public speaking engagements and prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate possesses recent supervisory experience, as well as journey-level building plan review experience working within a municipal, or other governmental jurisdiction. They have knowledge of California building codes and all related regulations for enforcement, construction methods, building materials, tools, and safety standards, and engineering principles and details used in the design of buildings or soils construction. The highly qualified candidate will demonstrate the ability to successfully coordinate and manage plan review staff and the activities of a municipal building department, while also establishing and cultivating strong relationships across departmental lines with a diverse group of staff and permit customers. Minim qualifications: typically, graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s in engineering, architecture or related field and three years of experience performing permit, plan review or site inspection functions, which includes one year in a supervisory position.
