Description:

CalPERS is currently seeking a talented leader to become the next Chief of Health Plan Research and Administration (HPRA). The HPRA Chief oversees contracts with 11 health maintenance organizations that provide care to approximately 1.1 million CalPERS members, as well as a self-insured preferred provider plan covering 450,000 members. The Chief is responsible for helping the CalPERS Board of Administration (Board) to determine covered benefits; sets CalPERS policy for managing health care costs, including pharmaceutical costs, and for ensuring that CalPERS members receive high quality care in every county in the state; leads CalPERS’ Federal policy engagement, recommends positions on State legislation to the Board, and oversees research and policy teams that develop solutions to the challenges facing large purchasers of healthcare; and sets data policy for the CalPERS health program, which has one of the richest claims-based data repositories in the US.

Qualifications:

– Have a deep background in health policy, the health care industry, health economics, finance administration and business strategies. The ideal candidate will have worked in a health-related governmental or private sector position for a minimum of 10 years, with experience as a senior manager in such an entity. – Be a proven leader capable of building and retaining a team of exceptional professionals, with a track record for identifying the right initiatives and leading a team that executes them; have demonstrated ability to think strategically and function effectively as a member of a top management team; and have experience in an administrative or executive capacity, at least equivalent to a Career Executive Appointment, Level A, with responsibility for policy development and program administration. – Be highly collaborative, capable of working with other exceptional leaders to identify and execute critical goals as a team.
