The City of San Mateo (pop. 104,570) is the second-largest municipality in San Mateo County, located on the San Francisco Peninsula, covering 14.6 square miles. A charter city, San Mateo has a FY2020-21 operating budget of $194.9 million and over 700 staff. The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council and, with the assistance of three Assistant City Attorneys, serves as legal advisor to the City Council, commissions and staff, and represents the organization in civil litigation.
 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and knowledgeable municipal legal advisor able to provide a balanced and impartial perspective in analyzing potential risk while providing alternatives that advance the city’s priorities and goals. Extensive executive or senior level experience in municipal law serving as a City Attorney or Assistant City Attorney or equivalent experience is desired. Education equivalent to a JD from an accredited law school and membership in the California State Bar is also required.

Compensation will be based upon experience and qualifications (current City Attorney’s salary is $241,799). Salary is supplemented by competitive benefits.
