Description:

The County of Marin, California is conducting an extensive search effort to attract highly experienced individuals interested in leading this critically important county function as the new Public Defender. Serving as a member of the County’s executive management team, the Public Defender is responsible for oversight of the Office of the Public Defender’s services and activities, including the provision of mandated legal counseling and defense services to eligible persons. The annual budget for the Office of Public Defender is $8.4 million for FY 2020-21, including 22 FTE attorney staff with an overall staff of 37.3 budgeted FTEs. The Public Defender is also expected to serve as the Liaison to the Board of Supervisors and represent the Office of the Public Defender to other departments, elected officials, interested community groups, and the Local Bar Association. Annual salary is $225,867 to $250,265. The County also offers an attractive benefits package, including MCERA Retirement.

Qualifications:

This position requires a Juris Doctorate and 10 years of extensive professional legal experience with emphasis upon the preparation and trial of felony cases, including 3 years performing supervisory functions. Budgetary and administrative experience is highly desirable. Active membership in the California State Bar Association in good standing is required at time of submittal and appointment. This position also requires compliance with State of California, Government Code – Section #27701: A person is not eligible to the Office of Public Defender unless he/she has been a practicing attorney in all of the courts of the State of California for at least the year preceding the date of his/her election or appointment.
