CSAC testimony Before Assembly Budget Subcommittee
April 27, 2020
The following testimony was provided by CSAC Executive Director of Legislative Services Darby Kernan.
“Today’s focus by the Committee on how to restart the economy is important. I want to emphasize the important role California Counties play in the economy. In 2018 California’s 58 Counties employed more than 425,000 individuals who serve in many different roles. Counties provide the core services all of your constituents depend on. We pay well over $30.6 billion in wages plus more than $10 billion in retirement and health contributions. A majority of our employees are union employees.
“My point with this information is that counties are an economic engine. That is why it is critical that the $1.1 billion in federal Coronavirus Relief Funds designated for local agencies gets allocated to counties as soon as possible so counties can continue to provide critical services. Please remember that any economic recovery includes counties. Thank you.”
