Fact Sheet: Medicare Behavioral Health Benefits for Older Adults

On January 30, 2024, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and the California Department of Aging jointly published a fact sheet for providers about Medicare behavioral health benefits, including highlights of expanded services and provider types available through Medicare.

Starting January 1, 2024, Medicare coverage and policies for behavioral health expanded to cover mental health services and visits with marriage & family therapists and mental health counselors, cover intensive outpatient services in certain settings, and strengthen requirements for Medicare Advantage plans around behavioral health network and coordination of behavioral health.
