New Data Released on the Medi-Cal Continuous Coverage Unwinding Dashboard

October 19, 2023

On October 17, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) published the August 2023 Medi-Cal continuous coverage unwinding eligibility measures data on the Medi-Cal Enrollment and Renewal Data webpage. The August dashboard includes data on Medi-Cal enrollment, applications in progress, redeterminations, and disenrollments. The dashboard also includes demographic details for all redetermination measures, along with the top reasons for disenrollments. The reports reflect statewide figures, but county-level data can also be downloaded from the dashboard.

After three years of waiving annual Medi-Cal redetermination requirements due to COVID-19, the Medi-Cal eligibility review process restarted just a few months ago for Medi-Cal members. According to the dashboard, nearly 15.5 million members were enrolled in Medi-Cal as of August 30, 2023. During the month of August, Medi-Cal received 171,798 new applications for coverage, 72,569 individuals became newly enrolled in coverage for the first time, and 123,224 new applications are currently in the review process in county offices.

Nearly 1,041,900 Medi-Cal members were due for redetermination in August 2023. Eighty-two percent returned their renewal packets or completed their renewals through federal electronic sources. Of total redeterminations completed in August, 20 percent of redeterminations were disenrolled for not returning necessary information or for being determined ineligible. However, Medi-Cal members who were disenrolled in August have until November 30, 2023, to return needed information to have their coverage restored.
