Upcoming Funding Availability for Behavioral Health Infrastructure Grants

December 7, 2023

Last week, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) released a Program Update for the Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) Round 6, Part I: Unmet Needs. A total of $240.4 million in funding will be made available through a Request for Applications (RFA) that will be released in January 2024. Eligible applicants, including counties, cities, tribal entities, and non-profit organizations and for-profit organizations, are encouraged to apply to fund programs that expand the continuum of behavioral health infrastructure, such as crisis stabilization units, residential substance use disorder treatment facilities, psychiatric residential treatment facilities, and more. Awarded projects are anticipated to be announced in July 2024.

Authorized through the 2021-22 state budget, BHCIP provides $2.1 billion to construct, acquire, and expand properties and invest in mobile crisis infrastructure related to behavioral health. Since 2021, the state has issued funding for the first five rounds of BHCIP to fund various projects to expand the state’s behavioral health infrastructure. BHCIP Round 6, Part I is the first half of the final round of BHCIP funding. The RFA for Round 6, Part II is expected to be released in January 2025. Additional information on BHCIP, including previously awarded projects, can be found on the BHCIP webpage.
