Description:

Under general supervision, inspects construction projects to interpret and enforce compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and laws. Incumbents in this class perform difficult and/or complex building code inspects and assist in the review of construction plans. Incumbents oversee the investigation of alleged violations of housing, building, plumbing, and electrical codes. Employees in this class receive limited supervision within a broad framework of standard policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED; and two (2) years of full-time work experience performing standard building inspections for a public agency responsible for enforcing municipal, county, and state building and construction codes,; or one (1) year of experience as a Building Inspector I with the County of Mendocino; or a combination of related education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver’s License

Must possess two (2) certifications in either Commercial or Residential Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and/or Plumbing Inspection. Must obtain the remaining six (6) commercial and residential certifications within these disciplines (for a total of eight [8] certifications) within 24 months of hire.

OR

If possessing a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Building Inspector I with the County of Mendocino, candidates must also possess certifications as a Residential Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Inspector. Must obtain certification in two (2) of the following commercial disciplines: Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and/or Plumbing Inspection within 12 months of hire. Must obtain the remaining two (2) commercial certifications within these disciplines (for a total of eight [8] certifications) within 24 months of hire.

Note: Certificates must be issued by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) or the International Code Council (ICC). Alternative certifications recognized by IAPMO and/or ICC may be substituted if determined acceptable.
