Description:

San Mateo County Planning & Building Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Building Official/Building Inspection Manager. Under the direction of the Director of Community Development, the Building Official/Manager will plan, organize, direct and evaluate the department’s building inspection programs, activities and staff. Responsibilities include the enforcement of legal provisions governing construction and inspection activities; direct and indirect supervision over assigned supervisory and technical staff; development of County and departmental policies and procedures; recruitment, training, evaluation and development of staff; and performing more complex inspections.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader in the arena of Building Inspection Technology, with a sound understanding of the laws, codes, regulations, practices and policies pertaining to the design, construction and inspection of large commercial and industrial buildings, residential dwellings and other structures. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be approachable and politically astute, with a management style that fosters trust, loyalty, respect, commitment and partnership; an excellent problem solver and decision maker with superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to present complex concepts and make recommendations to local government boards; adept at effectively utilizing limited resources while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction; and quick and clear-thinking, calm under pressure, tactful and positive.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate for this position will possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Management, Public Administration, Engineering, Architecture or other related field; 5 years of increasingly responsible administrative and/or supervisory experience in design, inspection of large commercial and industrial buildings, residential dwellings and other structures; and Certification as a Certified Building Official, Plans Examiner and Combination Commercial and Residential Inspector (building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing) from the International Code Council (ICC), or other recognized testing agencies in compliance with AB 717 (1996). Certified CASp Inspector from the Division of State Architects (DSA) is preferred.
