Description:

The Monterey County Counsel’s office is looking for an attorney to advise the County Public Guardian, and appear in court on Probate matters and conservatorships for the mentally disabled under the California Welfare and Institutions Code. This attorney may be assigned additional or alternative matters from within the overall workload of the office. The Deputy I position is the entry level class in the Deputy County Counsel series, and is characteristically assigned routine cases but may assist with more difficult cases under close supervision. Assignments are generally limited in scope and are performed within a procedural framework established by higher level attorneys.

Qualifications:

The applicant should know and understand basic principles of California and federal civil, constitutional, and administrative law, and California and federal civil procedure. The study, interpretation and application of statutes, regulations, court decisions, and legal authorities in connection with the giving of legal advice, writing legal opinions and the preparation of cases, pleadings and briefs is required. The applicant must also be able to present law, facts, evidence and arguments clearly and logically, both in written and oral form, and must be licensed to practice law in California. Admission to practice in the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is preferred.
