Description:

The attorneys of the County Counsel’s office are expected to show initiative, to demonstrate dedication to their jobs, to work well in a team, and to communicate effectively, whether in writing or verbally, with a wide variety of audiences. The position covered by this recruitment will have primary responsibility for providing skilled, assertive legal representation for the Human Resources and Administration Departments. Representative tasks include appearing in administrative disciplinary appeals and grievance hearings, responding to DFEH and EEOC complaints, and providing routine legal advice to Departments on employment related matters including issues involving discrimination, wage and hour laws and leave entitlements. Ancillary assignments involving other areas of local government law may also be provided from time to time, the nature of which will vary depending upon prior experience and interests.

Qualifications:

BOTH LEVELS:
Education: Possession of active, valid membership in the California State Bar is evidence of sufficient education for this classification.

LEVEL III:
Experience
: 1)Three years of experience practicing civil law as a licensed attorney, OR 2) One year of experience as a Deputy County Counsel II in Kings County, OR 3) Two years of experience practicing law as a licensed attorney including at least one year of experience practicing public agency law in California comparable to a Deputy County Counsel II.

LEVEL IV:
Experience
: Three years of experience as a Deputy County Counsel in a County Counsel’s office with extensive experience in advising county departments or special districts and including demonstrated expertise in one or more specialized areas of law, or comparable experience in a law office practicing public agency law. (The recruitment and selection process may specify or emphasize one or more specialized areas of law relevant to the County Counsel’s office.)
