Description:

One vacancy in the Kings County Counsel’s Office which will be dedicated to the Child Protective Services. This position includes a management benefit package including CalPERS retirement (see benefits section to determine plan/tier placement), 64 hours extra annual vacation which can be cashed out and fully paid health, dental and vision insurance premiums. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The typical life of a list is six months, and this list may be extended for up to an additional 18 months (24 months total).

Primarily represents and advises the Human Service Agency, Child Protective Services Division (CPS) regarding dependency cases; prepares or supervises the preparation of legal documents such as writs; file and respond to appeals; prepares all related briefings and court appearances; expands level of expertise; reads new case and statutory law and legislative changes; attends training seminars; reads and applies training material; may conduct training for CPS personnel and other attorneys in the department in the CPS specialized area of law; may provide supervision to other attorneys engaged in CPS matters; may assist with other areas of law and responsibility carried out by the County Counsel as assigned (see General section available on detailed job specification).

Qualifications:

Education: Possession of active, valid membership in the California State Bar is evidence of sufficient education for this classification.

License: Possession of a valid, appropriate California driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Level III Experience: Three years of experience practicing civil law as a licensed attorney, OR two years of experience practicing law as a licensed attorney including at least one year of experience practicing public agency law in California comparable to a Deputy County Counsel II.

Level IV Experience: Three years of experience as a Deputy County Counsel in a County Counsel’s office with extensive experience in advising county departments or special districts and including demonstrated expertise in Child Protective Services, or comparable experience in a law office practicing public agency law.
