Description:

The role of the Legal Office is to provide timely and effective legal representation to the LACERA in applications for disability retirement pensions and survivors’ allowances. This position performs independent analysis and provides legal assistance to a Senior Staff Counsel, LACERA, serving as the principal legal advisor to the Board of Retirement and LACERA staff on disability retirement pension matters.

Qualifications:

Certificate of completion of a paralegal training program approved by the American Bar Association or accredited by the California Department of Education or by an equivalent accrediting agency from another state -or- meeting the definition of a Paralegal under California Business and Professions Code Section 6450; -and- two years experience in a legal office performing paralegal or similar duties

-OR-

Graduation from an accredited law school with one (1) year of experience in a legal office performing paralegal or similar duties.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS II – Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and occasional bending, walking, stooping or squatting. Incumbents sit for extended periods of time. Work is performed in an office environment in a controlled climate

Your experience in Public retirement system law, specifically County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 (CERL), Public Employee Pension Reform Act (PEPRA), and all other applicable statutes.
Your experience as a Litigation Paralegal.
Your experience in the field of Disability Law (e.g., Workers’ Compensation, Social Security, Long-Term Disability, and/or Personal Injury).
Your experience analyzing, extracting, and summarizing technical information from confidential medical records.
Your experience in writing legal documents such as points and authorities, legal pleadings, and/or briefs.
Your experience performing legal research and analysis using legal databases such as Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw, and/or other legal sources.
Your experience and proficiency in using Microsoft Word.
