The Public Defender has the mandated responsibility of defending any person who is not financially able to employ counsel and who is charged with the commission of any crime, contempt or offense subject to trial in the superior courts.  The Public Defender also represents qualified individuals in probate and welfare proceedings, and may represent any person who is not financially able to employ counsel in proceedings relating to the nature or conditions of detention prior to adjudication.  The Office provides representation in the Drug Court, Domestic Violence Court, Mental Health Court, Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Court, and the DUI Compliance Court.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must be an active member of the State Bar of California, and should be an experienced, knowledgeable public defender with a minimum of ten years of extensive responsible legal experience with emphasis upon the preparation of trial of felony cases, and 3+ years of experience in the supervision of attorneys.  Budgetary and administrative experience is desirable.  The ideal candidate for Public Defender will be an accomplished professional with a strong commitment to public service and the mission of the Office of Public Defender.  This executive will have a strong reputation in legal defense work, and will be an excellent manager of people who has extraordinary interpersonal and communication skills.  The position enjoys a competitive total compensation benefit package.
